SMACT is supported by membership donations. By joining or renewing your membership, you help SMACT become a sustainable nonprofit that promotes the use of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Maine.

How it all started…

  • 2008–2009 — Local psychologists Joel Guarna and Elizabeth Kubik led the first ACT workshops in Portland, sparking the creation of an ongoing peer consultation group.

  • 2009 — The ACT Peer Consultation Group held its first meeting at MMC Family Practice. The group was multidisciplinary from the start and has met monthly ever since.

  • 2010 — Teresa Valliere joined the community and, alongside Joel, began leading ACT trainings across Maine, expanding our reach and membership.

  • 2012–2014 — Members launched ACT Study Groups and the EvoS Book Club, exploring contextual behavioral science in new formats. Teresa also organized our first retreat on Cushing Island in 2014—an annual tradition that continues today.

  • 2016 — The nickname “SMACT” took hold and became our community identity.

  • 2019–2020 — A subgroup of members formalized the organization as a nonprofit. Beth Eilers was elected our first president.

Today, SMACT is a vibrant, multidisciplinary community of professionals committed to learning, connection, and the advancement of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in Maine.
